We cancelled the evening service. A liberation. A relief. It had become a drag. Not quite sure why we did it.
But then, people began coming forward with their ideas:- an evening of free, spontaneous, charismatic-style worship; an open mic event with games and quizzes for young adults networking the metropolitan; a training event for pastoral care workers caring for our wide, disparate congregation; a social evening for anyone who came – turned into a lively discussion of politics and eschatology [an intriguing sharing of views on left-right, Anabaptist, pre or post millennium].
A tide of pneumatic creativity had been unleashed by the sudden availability of this empty space in the church diary. The Spirit flows through the dreams, aspirations, hopes of ordinary believers. We have continued with the open mic events, Sunday Specials, drawing in musicians and friends; soon we will have an open evening with our youth workers, capitalising on their desire to contribute to this community.
The Spirit is moving. We sometimes have to keep up with her. Playing catch up with the ruach is exciting, though a little un-nerving. Mission Dei is not only an academic concept. It is a lived reality as we navigate the river.
