Recently I was interviewed on UCB radio. UCB stands for United Christian Broadcasters, and is a major Christian ministry. I was on Paul Hammond programme, playing Christian music and commenting on current affairs, as well as talking about WPBC and the new role at Spurgeons. It was suggested by Paula Cummings, a former member of our church and now a publicist for UCB.
It was hardly the beginning of a major ministry breakthrough for me, but fascinating nonetheless. Very professional, and welcoming to me, UCB was also an insight into how contemporary media can be used to proclaim the gospel and support believers in their faith. I’d always thought Christian media were trapped in in a conservative, inward-looking pietism . The team at UCB and the interviewer, Paul Hammond, proved me very wrong.
We need to use every media to incarnate the word into culture, to construct a Christian worldview, and to build relevant, alternative institutional expressions. Abraham Kuyper advocated Christian involvement in society, not just in everyday organisations, but in specifically faith-formed groupings, which can embody Christian values to an unbelieving society.
Christian radio and TV, with the internet, are crucial avenues for our counter-cultural subversion of postmodern conformism.
