Today I met with the Iranian Fellowship in our church. Brave people who turned from Islam to Christ. It felt a very poignant time, because it was my last meeting with them before we leave the church for Spurgeons college.
Combined with kindness, good food and hospitality. We then shared our journeys to toward and with Christ.
Why did they became dissatisfied with Islam? They mentioned a number of reasons - the control, rules, externality of religion, formalism, oppression, treatment of women, rote prayers.
One guy had taken refuge in the fact that Islam was not the original religion of his nation, and had become interested in Zoroastrianism. Apparently their symbol is now a fashionable necklace pendant for men, a symbol for rebellion against religious tyranny after the Green Revolution has been crushed.
Others have turned to Christ. Why? Mainly because of the promise of a personal relationship with God, being able to pray as they feel without set prayer formulas; and the promise of forgiveness, through the sacrifice of Christ – plus his resurrection from the dead, the only prophet to do that.
It is God’s love that cuts across political and religious obstacles. I am blessed to know them.
