Notting Hill Carnival 28-29th August 2011

After a gap of two years we are planning an outreach again to Notting Hill Carnival. This is the biggest street party in Europe: 1-2 million people converge on these streets from all over the world. It began in the 1960s as a West Indian festival, and has expanded until it embraces all culture, with an especially significant Brazilian contribution.

The event is called “The God corner”, essentially a street concert: with rap, hip hop, reggae, grime, gospel, and acoustic sets; plus street witnessing through street theatre, dancem, circus skills and tracting. Some years we’ve had hundreds of carnival-goers dancing on the street outside the church under the street lamps.

Our aim is to present the good news in a culturally relevant way to urban populations. In particular to the music and arts basis of Carnival. Releasing Christian people’s creativity and artistic ability will impact the society in a penetrating way, creating an openness to receive the Word, without sacrificing hard-hitting content.

We are working in a consortium with other groups: Urban Mission & Calvary Chapel, Voices of Zion, Mighty Men of Valour, YWAM, Street Pastors and Word 4 Weapons.
